Digital sovereignty is not the right to be left alone. It is the capacity to act on your own terms while remaining connected to everyone else. And that capacity has a name. Coordination.
If sovereignty is the capacity to set, enforce, and revise the terms on which you interact with others, then exercising it requires four distinct abilities.
- You must be able to state what you want in a way others can act on.
- You must be recognizable as yourself, with standing.
- You must operate under rules you accept and can hold others to.
- And you must be able to prove, to yourself and to others, that what happened actually conformed to all of the above.
