Commons Computer Migration

We have migrated from Hostinger to a GMKTec mini PC in the rack at Z-Space.

It’s running Proxmox which means we can virtualize the server to run different apps.

We virtualized Cloudron and migrated it directly after trimming services on there. This migration went quite well, other than some bumpy pieces around DNS needing to be manually updated.

We need to also move off Cloudron to avoid an $180USD annual license fee renewal. Or, collectively agree to fund it for another year.

We have an Open Collective now as part of our DWebYVR / DWeb Camp Cascadia https://opencollective.com/commonscomputer - we don’t have set tiers or anything yet, so that’s work to do to figure out how to pool costs.

There are a number of organizations like DWebYVR itself, Camp, Z-Space, AT Community Fund that have used this for years so we’re going to start by asking those orgs to contribute.

We have @aynish @daffl @chadkoh @boris as volunteer server admins, split across NixOS (Anish is lead), Cloudron, and now Proxmox / Ansible with infrastructure as code.

We’ll be surveying what apps people actually use and what new apps people might want to have shared access to.
